Some paintings arrive as images.
Others arrive as presences.
Guardian of the Lantern Woods emerged slowly through the twilight of my Spirit Animals of Oz series — not as a creature alone, but as a protector at the edge of the unseen world.
The wolf has always symbolized instinct, loyalty, and deep inner knowing.
But in Oz, the animals are never only animals.
They are messengers.
They walk beside us.
They appear when something within us is waking up.

The Lantern Woods of Oz
In the world of Spirit Animals of Oz, there are places that return again and again — landscapes of symbolism and intuition.
The Lantern Woods is one of them.
A forest of amber light and dripping shadow, where spirit guardians stand at thresholds and hidden companions linger within the trees.
This wolf is the keeper of that realm.

⸻
A Forest Painted in Layers of Story
At first glance, you may see the wolf stepping forward through dusk.
But this piece holds more than one narrative.
The woods are built from veils of oil paint, twilight color, and fragments of architecture — like doorways half-hidden inside the forest.
This is part of what I call Hidden Narratives:
paintings that reveal themselves slowly over time, like a story you return to again and again.

Look Closer: The Hidden Characters
One of my favorite parts of creating this work was discovering the companions that began to appear beneath the surface.
In the close details, you’ll notice subtle watchers — spirit-like figures woven into the atmosphere of the Lantern Woods.
And then, suddenly:
An owl.
The owl appears as a messenger in the background, luminous-eyed and quiet, as if the forest itself is aware of being seen.
These hidden characters are never planned in a literal way.
They emerge through intuition — through the act of painting as translation.

⸻
The Wolf as Guardian and Portal
To me, the wolf in this piece is not aggressive.
It is steady.
Present.
A keeper of the threshold.
This is what Spirit Animals of Oz is about:
Not illustration.
Not decoration.
But companionship — the sense that something wild and wise walks beside you, especially in moments of change.

⸻
Bringing the Guardian Into the Everyday
Because so many collectors want to live with these images beyond the canvas, I’ve begun creating a small collection of pieces featuring the Guardian of the Lantern Woods:
• Throw pillows for the home
• Coffee mugs for daily ritual
• Tote bags for wandering
• Wearable art as quiet protection
Each item carries the same atmosphere — a small portal into the Lantern Woods.
The Guardian as a home companion — Lantern Woods throw pillow.

Available Original Painting
The original Guardian of the Lantern Woods is available as a one-of-a-kind oil painting, part of my ongoing Spirit Animals of Oz collection.
If it speaks to you, trust that.
Some paintings find their person.
Thank you for stepping into Oz with me.

Spirit Animals of Oz
The Lantern Woods does not yet exist as a planted forest on the land — but it exists in paint. And one day, tree by tree, it will.
